018: Cannabis, Pelvic Pain & Sexual Function: What Does the Science Actually Say? – Part 2

In part 2, we continue our conversation with Dr. James Pfaus, behavioral neuroscientist and Assistant Professor at Charles University in Prague.

We explore what current research does and does not show about THC and CBD for pelvic and sexual health, and why so much of what we know still comes from self-reported experiences rather than large clinical trials. Dr. Pfaus explains how dose, delivery method, and individual sensitivity all shape effects on discomfort, arousal, and pleasure.

We also talk about placebo responses, drug interactions, and why cannabis products with known, consistent dosing matter for both clinicians and patients. Listeners will learn how clinicians might think through “start low, test thoughtfully” strategies, why route of administration changes onset and intensity, and where carefully documented case series could move the science forward.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How THC and CBD may affect pelvic discomfort and sexual response
  • Why most current knowledge comes from case reports instead of large clinical trials
  • Dose finding with gummies and other formats using a “self-experiment” approach
  • Differences between oral, rectal, vaginal, and inhaled administration
  • Placebo effects in sexual medicine versus studies on physical discomfort
  • Risks of dependence, withdrawal, and mixing cannabis with other substances
